Recent studies show that people read 25 percent more slowly on computer monitors than on the printed page. So here are some tips for writing on the web:

1. Make your main points on the first screen. Ninety percent of viewers won't go past the main page unless you immediately grab their attention.

2. Give the rest of the information through links to other pages. Offer options so readers can take control of where they're going on your site.

3. Use short sentences, words, and paragraphs. Divide and summarize the text with subheadings. Many viewers search by subheadings.

4. Remember that the Web is a global medium. Readers may not speak English as a primary language, so avoid regional or cultural expressions.

5. Allow readers to react to your Web site. Provide email feedback, discussion boards, or links to appropriate sites and chat rooms.
